The Fourth of July is a popular day for kids for many reasons! Independence Day marks the day our country was unified as a nation, so many of us celebrate with our loved ones with food on the grill and fireworks. A lot of us will even have some Fourth of July activities.
Independence Day is the perfect time to enjoy some creative family fun with the kids and make Fourth of July memories the entire family will always cherish. Here are six simple and entertaining Fourth of July activities and crafts the entire family will love.
6 Fourth of July Activities
Play patriotic games.
July is the perfect time to host an outdoor get together with friends, family, and neighbors. Use your backyard to enjoy the sprinkler; have a water balloon fight with red, white and blue balloons; play some festive music and enjoy your time together.
Learn about the American flag.
The most common and thought of symbol of the Fourth of July is the American flag. Take the time to teach your kids why it’s so important. Use the day to dress patriotically, too. Have your kids wear their favorite red, white, and blue attire or let your kids decorate a shirt for Independence Day with stamps or puffy paint.
Throw a birthday party for America with an edible flag.
Create a rectangular-shaped white cake. Cover it with white icing and top with blueberries and raspberries or sliced strawberries to make it look like the American flag. Another option is to bake a batch of your favorite sugar cookies and top with white icing. Add some pizzazz to the white frosting with blue and red sugar crystals and enjoy!
Attend a parade or festival.
There are always fun activities going on in town to celebrate Independence Day. Look online or in the newspaper to see what local events are happening. Last year, we had a great time at a local festival that offered a free petting zoo, volleyball, and an array of food trucks with everything from snow cones to elephant ears.

See the lights.
Late-night fireworks displays can be tricky for kiddos with bedtimes. Consider making the evening an exception for a later bedtime – you could even let the kids watch fireworks in their pajamas. Check online to find evening firework displays near your home. Leave fireworks to the professionals if you are concerned about safety.
Make a red, white, and blue ice cream treat.
Fill a dish with vanilla ice cream and top with blueberries and strawberries to keep cool on this special summer day.
The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. The smell of hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill, the sunshine, the parades, and the overall feeling of unity and excitement that surrounds that day take me back to my childhood. Our annual Fourth celebrations are some of my earliest and fondest memories. I hope that someday my kids feel the same way about this holiday! Have a safe and happy Independence Day.
