Here are some free family activities in Indianapolis and its suburbs:
Downtown Indy’s Monument Circle. Stroll around Monument Circle in downtown Indy. The kids will get a kick out of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. The observation level is 330 steps up or you can take the elevator. The structure symbolizes both the city of Indianapolis and the state of Indiana. The monument is a memorial to the Hoosiers who served in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, the Frontier Wars and the Spanish-American War.
Indy Canal Walk. The 3-mile loop Downtown Canal Walk shows off Indy’s best contemporary architecture and is a waterside walkway for sightseers or those who want some exercise. The kids will enjoy seeing the water, including pedal boats and gondolas floating down the canal. Plan ahead and take a family bikeride.
Indy Reads Books. The independent bookstore Indy Reads Books located on Massachusetts Avenue offers a free story time event on the fourth Saturday of every month. Storyteller Will Gould shares children’s stories, both new and old. The bookstore sells new and used books.
Indianapolis Museum of Art. This art museum with gardens offers free admission on the first Thursday of each month. Visit the gardens and outdoor art and nature park at the IMA for a great place for children to play, learn, and explore.
The Park Indoor Playground at Traders Point Church. Newly renovated last year, this indoor play area has locals going crazy! Admission is free to everyone. Your kids will love the slides, tunnels and climbing walls – and they’ll work off a lot of energy.
Goodrich Theaters Free Kids’ Movies. Movies for the entire family aren’t cheap! Hamilton 16 IMAX in Noblesville and Brownsburg 8 offer free children’s movies on Saturdays and Sundays, from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Select participating movies each week. Seats are filled on a first come, first served basis.
