As a new parent, it’s understandable why you’re going to be worried. Even little things could make you incredibly anxious and make you want to call the doctor. But when is it time to get help from the professionals? Here are some of the issues where it might be worth giving them a ring.
Crying
Don’t get the wrong idea here, we’re not suggesting that you should call up the doc every time your baby cries. Babies cry for a massive variety of reasons. They might cry because someone sneezes and it surprises them as they are drifting off to sleep. They might cry because they are hungry or simply because they want attention. As a mom, you will learn what different cries mean because this is how babies communicate with you. What you need to watch out for is the pain cry, which is sharp and does not stop when typical needs, such as food and being held, are accounted for. This suggests that there might be something going on that you do need to explore a little further.
Temperature Trouble
It’s quite common for babies to have trouble regulating their temperature. Due to this, particularly when they are first born, babies can go from hot to cold quite quickly. If you’re not prepared for this then it can be incredibly worrying. However, you won’t really need to worry unless your baby’s temperature has reached an extreme point (102 F or higher) and isn’t going down. If this happens, then it’s possible that your baby will experience a seizure. This can be terrifying for a new parent and it might mean something is going on underneath the surface. A high temp could also be caused by something like a urine infection, which will require an antibiotic.
Dehydration
Dehydration can be quite serious for babies. Some of the common signs of dehydration include low levels of urination. Anything less than six wet diapers a day might be a cause for concern. You might also notice that the soft spot on the head is sunken in. In most cases, babies will receive enough hydration from breastmilk or formula, but if it seems yours is not, give the doctor a call.
Low Oxygen
Finally, it’s possible that your little one isn’t getting enough oxygen. The signs of this problem will be if your baby has blue fingers, toes, or lips. They might also seem incredibly lethargic and constantly tired. While babies should sleep for a large portion of the day, if they are sleepy all the time, then this could be a sign that something might be wrong. A doctor will usually want to conduct some blood tests to find out what’s going on here and then take action in terms of treatment. It’s quite common for babies to have issues with poor circulation.
We hope this helps you understand some of the reasons that you should call a doctor about your little one. Remember nine times out of ten even when it seems like there’s something wrong, it’s going to be nothing. But for your peace of mind, and the wellbeing of your baby, it’s always better to be safe.
