Mumbling Mommy

Spirituality, unlike religion, isn’t always about adopting a rigid belief system or following rituals that don’t speak to you or for your soul. It’s about connection—a connection with yourself, with others, and with the world around you—and it’s something larger than just you and the day-to-day grind you have going on.

People who engage in spiritual practices often describe a deeper sense of meaning, lighter energy, and the ability to navigate life’s tough times without feeling completely adrift.

If you’ve been looking for meaning in your life and want to find that answer, then spirituality might be for you. There’s no single way to practise it, and it’s solely down to how what speaks to you can offer your life purpose, truly anchor yourself, and give you some calm in the storm that is life.

From the Pagan approach to humanism to New Age spirituality, Indigenous spirituality, and more, there’s something for everyone, whether you want roots in a non-religious spirituality or you want to adopt an approach that merges both religion and spiritual aspects, like voodoo. These options allow you to explore and see how you might follow this path and what benefits spirituality offers you.

Calm in Chaos

Think of your mind like a busy train station. There are a million thoughts rushing through it each day, things you need to remember, yesterday’s arguments bumping into tomorrow’s anxieties, and a random voice shouting over the tannoy, and you’ve no idea who it is or what platform you’re supposed to be on right now.

Spirituality is the practice of stepping off the platform, quietening the noise, and allowing yourself to breathe even for a minute. This is achieved via acts such as meditation, prayer, or simply closing your eyes and listening to your breathing to simplify everything around you.

Symbolically, it’s akin to carrying a candle in the storm. The wind may howl around you, but that flickering flame is holding its own and is a reminder that peace often comes not from silencing life’s chaos, but finding your calm and holding on to your strength within it.

Belonging

At some point in life, everyone yearns for a sense of belonging, to know that they matter to someone or something, and that what they do and who they are truly makes a difference.

Even when surrounded by people all day long, it’s common to feel isolated. Spirituality bridges this gap, offering a sense of community and connection.

It might be a prayer service or attending a meeting place, or church. Or it could be a group of like-minded people coming together to practise activities that ground them and connect them to each other.

It’s about finding common ground and the important details that surpass the frivolities in life, and make you feel like you’re a part of something bigger, more worthwhile, and you can make a difference, even if it’s just a small difference.

Spirituality is like stitching yourself back into a tapestry. Alone, you’re a single thread; together, that’s what makes it an artwork that people notice.

Healing

Healing comes in many forms; there’s no simple one way to heal, and spirituality can unlock beneficial and effective healing for many types of trauma.

Whether it’s the heartbreak of a lost love, the grief of losing a loved one, or financial worries, spirituality offers tools and resources to help address these wounds. Practising spirituality isn’t an overnight fix and shouldn’t be treated as such, but it does soften the edges and provides a path towards healing.

Journaling, meditation, communication, forgiveness rituals, and even voodoo curse removal options are all tools you can utilize to help heal what needs healing and clear out the clutter in your soul, and so you can open the windows and let in the light once more without worrying about what might escape.

Energy Protection

Your energy, physical and mental, isn’t limitless, and life can be draining in so many ways. And many of these are invisible drains, and you don’t realize they’re at play until your resources are depleted.

It’s your friend who only ever calls when they need you for something and doesn’t return the favor. It’s the pile of clutter on the kitchen counter that causes you to frown when you see it. It’s the boss who has no boundaries and is constantly encroaching on your personal time.

These all drain your energy more than you probably realize.

Your spirituality allows you to protect your energy and guard yourself from those who don’t deserve what you have to offer. Sometimes this looks like burning sage, or it could be a cleansing ritual. Sometimes it’s having the courage to say no and mean it. But spirituality allows you to implement the barriers that work for you, so you can put them in place when the situation calls for it, so you’re no longer drained excessively by people who constantly take and don’t give anything in return. It enables you to keep more of yourself.

Resilience Building

This isn’t making you resilient because you need to be or because you are refusing to be beaten. Spirituality builds resilience in healthy, positive ways. It gives you tools and therapies to use to help you when life gets tough, so you’re not just putting a brave face on things; you’re genuinely making the best of what life throws at you.

It’s about helping you to find meaning in the pauses, patience in the waiting, and the understanding that not every question needs an answer. Sometimes, the question just needs to sit and be present.

Picture it like this: it’s like standing on the edge of a dark forest. Without spirituality, you can only see the dark shadows; with it, you can see the light guiding you to the path. Even if you can’t see the whole way forward, you can see enough to move forward.

Resilience in this context isn’t just optimism; it’s a quiet reassurance that you can face whatever life throws at you because you’re connected to something bigger than life itself, and you have faith that it will carry you through.
