Being a mom is, for many, a wonderful thing – perhaps even a dream come true – but that doesn’t mean it’s not hard, and it doesn’t mean that there won’t be times when you feel as though you’re losing yourself. That’s why it’s so important to be yourself as much as possible when you have children; it means you won’t forget who you are, and you’ll always be able to stay true to the person you were before, even if your priorities might have changed. With that in mind, here are some excellent ways to be yourself when you’re a mom.

Keep Up With Your Interests
Most people have hobbies and interests they like to take part in, and this is a good thing. When you have something like this that you enjoy, you’ll always have something to look forward to and something to occupy yourself with – plus, depending on the activity, you might also be doing things to keep your body and brain in good health, which is obviously important.
These things tend to fall by the wayside when you have children because you don’t have as much time as you once did, or because your children’s needs have to come first (which is only right – it’s your responsibility as a parent to take care of them). However, that’s not to say you need to abandon your interests completely, and if you want to be yourself when you’re a mom, it’s best not to – you’ll need to keep up with your interests as much as you can. You might have to compromise a little or work things out well in advance, but it will definitely be worth it.
Find Your Clothing Style
Your clothing style says a lot about you and your personality, so whatever it is, embrace it and work with it to ensure you’re wearing clothes you love and that make you happy (and comfortable) no matter what you might be doing.
Don’t feel pressured to wear what the other moms are wearing or what you think would look suitable now you have children if that style just isn’t you – you’ll only be uncomfortable, and you definitely won’t feel like yourself, which can lead to all kinds of mental health issues. If you love wearing boho outfits all year round or you enjoy bright colors or if there’s a specific designer you think is the best, then wear those clothes – you’ll be happier, and that means you’ll be a better, more present parent at the same time.
Reclaim Your Body
As mentioned before, being a mom has a habit over taking over who you are as a person. This includes your body. Your body goes through massive changes when you’re pregnant and after you give birth. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, some people love their mommy body, but some people struggle with self image as they don’t recognize themselves in the mirror.
If this is a real concern, therapy can help with self image issues. You can also try to get fit and change your diet so you can better control your figure. If you know you’ve had all the kids you want, it could also be worth considering a mommy makeover, which is a series of cosmetic procedures designed for moms in mind.
The most important thing is that you recognize yourself in the mirror and that you love the mom and person you see.
Set Realistic Expectations
When you’re a mom, you’ll try to be the best parent you can possibly be, and that’s a good thing, of course. However, there’s a difference between being the best you can be and being perfect, and aiming for perfection is something that can cause a lot of problems and potentially make you doubt yourself too.
The best thing to do is to set realistic expectations for yourself, your children, and your parenting style. Don’t try to be someone and something you’re not because you think that’s what society demands of you, and instead, be yourself and do things your way. Everyone will find it much easier, and being a mom won’t have to be such a struggle.
