Show Up

The most important thing that you can do for your kids is to show up. Showing up for your kids is the one thing that they want from you more than anything else. We know that when they are younger they might ask for a whole host of things that their friends have, and they might think that material things are the be all and end all of life, but this does not last. Eventually they will understand that this is not the case, and they will remember the parents who showed up. They will remember the parents who came to every game and event even when it was tough for them to do so. They will remember the parents who sat at the kitchen table with them and helped them with their homework, not the one who bought them stuff but never turned up.

Listen To Their Needs

Another thing that you are going to need to do is ensure that you are listening to their needs. Your children will communicate with you in a whole range of ways, and it’s important that you have got your listening ears turned on. Sometimes you have to try to listen to the things that aren’t being said but are being inferred, which means you’ve got to actively listen. The most important thing is that you are trying to understand what they are saying so that you can help them in the best way possible.

Also ensure that you are helping them develop. Younger kids might find balance toys helpful, and their needs will change as they grow.

Keep Reaching Out

As your kids get older, they might pull away from you, and some kids even say hurtful things they don’t really mean. Keep reaching out your hand during this time. Remain consistent, remain present, and don’t just give up because things have gotten hard. You need to be a parent first and a friend second, remember that.

As you can see then, there are going to be times where being the best possible parent to your child can be tough, but the important thing is that you are doing your best. Your job is to love them, to be there for them, and to provide them with the best that you possibly can in life. It’s easier than you think when you realize that it’s not about the material things.
