However, it can be intimidating to walk into a doctor’s office and ask them about something like exercise. After all, most people workout without any need for medical invention, and you might feel a bit silly about asking. But that’s where these tips come in; here’s how to speak to your doctor about starting an exercise routine.

Ask About the Effect on Any Conditions You Have

If you do have a chronic illness, or any kind of chronic pain, or a disability, make sure this is the first point you bring up. You don’t want to work out for better health only to set yourself back when it comes to your long term progress! And the earlier you have this conversation, the better your workout routines are going to work for you. You’ll be able to exercise safely in the knowledge that you’re doing something that’s truly good for you, and that can help remove any mental blocks you may be experiencing. 

Ask About Intensity Levels

The more intense an exercise routine is, the more worried you might be about it. Heading along to a HIIT class might sound like fun in the moment, but what might it do to your blood pressure? If you’re not sure you’ve got a stable level at the moment, once again it’s time to mention this to your doctor. Based on your current health, what kind of exercise intensity will be right for you? And how soon could you move it up, if you find yourself getting on well? 

Ask About Medication Suggestions

If you’d like to change your heart medication, or you’d like to try a different type of SSRI, or if you need help researching the correct semaglutide for weight loss in non diabetics dosage, you can ask your doctor for advice. After all, some of these meds might not react well to a change in diet and exercise level, and that’s something you don’t want to find out about afterwards! 

Ask if You Should Keep Exercising

Of course, you shouldn’t just talk to your doctor once while embarking on your fitness journey. Go back there at least once a month to get your vitals checked. When you’re there the second or third time around, you can ask if you’re doing the right kind of exercise, and whether you should keep going or try something else. You might even ask for clarification about signs that mean you should stop; the more you know now, the less hurt you are later on! 

Your doctor should know you’re making a lifestyle change. Don’t be afraid to speak up!
