Good things DO come in small packages, and chia seeds are one of those. Have you heard of chia seeds, but don’t know how to incorporate them into your family’s diet? These little seeds (both black and white) are a complete protein that is packed with Omega-3’s and fiber to provide you with good nutrition and keep hunger at bay. Check out these five ways you and your family can experience the power of chia!
Use them as a topping
Want to add some crunch to your yogurt or oatmeal? I LOVE adding granola to my yogurt, so it’s easy to toss in a tablespoon of chia seeds too! One serving has only 60 calories, and packs in 5 grams of fiber and 3 grams of protein – the health benefits of chia seeds are astounding. Keep in mind that if the chia seeds sit for long, they’ll turn gel-like, so if you or your kids prefer a crunchier texture, add them right before you start eating.
Mix them into food
If you’re making pancakes, waffles, or muffins, toss some chia seeds into the batter. My kids love homemade pancakes, so this works well for us. The seeds are pretty much flavorless, so they work well in almost anything! Try them in this banana chocolate chip muffin recipe! They taste SO good!
Add them into smoothies
We LOVE making homemade smoothies with milk, yogurt, strawberries and blueberries. My kids ask for them daily, and I am usually down to make this since I know it help them eat a lot of their daily servings of fruit and veggies. I often sneak in a few spinach leaves (not enough to change the color of the shake – my kids will call me out)! I also add some chia seeds to really pump up the nutrients in the shake!
Put some in meat breading
The breading you use for chicken and fish is the perfect place to add some chia seeds and up the crunch factor and the health benefits! I love to make this French fried onion chicken recipe, and some chia seeds are the perfect addition to the crunchy breading used in this recipe!
Make them party of your beauty routine
I’m a huge fan of superfoods that can also be used on your skin (coconut oil is my other fave). Chia seeds are good for your inside, and your outside too! Check out this simple DIY chia scrub by Spa Index – it’ll scrub, exfoliate and moisturize your skin to make it GLOW! It’s as effective as store-bought scrubs, but without the price tag! I just used this scrub last night and my skin is really smooth and soft today.
If you’re like me and always looking for a new way to help my family consume more nutrients, try chia seeds! They’re SOOO good for you and a really easy superfood to incorporate into your daily routine and meals!
