From October through December 2016, Mumbling Mommy will highlight the Direct Relief charity. We choose charities that specifically aid children and women — see more information on our selection criteria below.
Here are a few brief facts from the Direct Relief website:
- “Direct Relief is a nonprofit medical assistance and disaster relief agency based in Santa Barbara, California. Since 1948, Direct Relief has provided assistance to indigenously run healthcare facilities and projects by supplying them with specifically requested and appropriate pharmaceuticals, supplies, nutritional supplements, and medical equipment. We serve the poor and victims of natural and civil disasters without regard to political affiliation, religious belief, ethnic identity, or ability to pay.”
- Direct Relief charity is providing aid for healthcare facilities dealing with the aftermath of flooding in Louisiana. It also is providing aid to Syrian refugees, to earthquake victims in Nepal, and to areas affected by the Zika virus.
- The organization focuses on overall health, maternal and child health, disease prevention and treatment, emergency preparedness and response, and strengthening locally run health facilities.
- Direct Relief is #1 on Charity Navigator’s list of Ten Best Charities Everyone’s Heard of.
We chose this charity specifically for the season of giving because it’s always good to be reminded of children worldwide who are in need. Basic things like healthcare access are not guaranteed in areas like Nepal and Syria, and the other ones that Direct Relief spotlights. If you are looking for a reputable place to give a little back before 2016 closes out, check out Direct Relief and see if it’s a good fit.
