As I wait for my third baby to be born, I’m looking back on some of the writing I did in the days leading up to birth of my first one. So far I’m finding that my views on all of the things to love about life have not changed much in nearly 7 years, but that most have only deepened through my experiences as a parent. I thought today’s entry was only fitting to talk about all my best gal pals.

#44 — BFFs and other gal pals

I have my fingers crossed that you will be a leader — someone strong willed who follows her own goals and dreams. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t have some people around you who you strive to be more like, and who you share experiences with.

I wish you the kind of best friends and girlfriends that I have found. Whether I was doing fake beauty pageants with neighborhood girls on my front porch at the age of 8, driving around town in my first car, listening to music with my high school kindred spirit, or reading an email on some of the humorous situations that arise in motherhood (from my college BF, who has a 16 month-old) — I have been lucky to have people to laugh with, complain to, giggle about dumb DUMB things with and who support me through all my decisions.

Family is great. Boyfriends can be incredible sources of strength as well. But the bonds you form with the females around you inspire confidence, self-esteem, goofy inside jokes, sensitivity and a feeling of belonging to a group bigger than yourself.

It’s lovely being a girl. Find others to enjoy that journey with.

#44 – BFFs and other gal pals

The good news for you is that you will be born with an automatic set of girlfriends — your three older sisters — who you will watch go through all the pains of growing up before you reach any of those milestones yourself. You may or may not go to them for advice but they will always be your role models and your protectors. I’m envious, I must admit, because I never had a sister, but I’m thankful that I get to watch the four of you grow up with each other.

When it comes to girlfriends, see the advice above that I already gave to your oldest sister and remember this too: You are your own person. Seek out the friends, male and female, who celebrate that person and pay no attention to those who do not. Life is full of too many beautiful people to waste any time on the toxic ones.
