Summer is a great time to get out with the kids and enjoy some new activities. It can also get a little bit costly if you aren’t careful. Here are some ideas for ways to get out and enjoy the upcoming hot months but keep some extra cash in your pocket.

Local Deals

Be sure to sign up for as many local deal of the day sites as possible. Groupon has a page dedicated specifically to activities for kids. For example, today’s Groupon offers included a play/cafe near my house, the Orlando Science Center (cheap adult admission + a kid for free!), discount kid’s magazine subscriptions, and an Orlando vacation deal. I also like to check out GrouponNow, which is typically deals that must be used that day or the following day. They often have coupons for smoothies, ice cream, and activities.

Farmers Markets/ Food Truck Stops

I live in a pretty metropolitan area, and we have many farmer’s markets to chose from. I can think of five or more off the top of my head! These markets are of course, great for buying fruit and veggies, but many of them offer other kid-friendly attractions as well. One local farmers market has live music that is sometimes geared towards kids. I’ve even seen bounce houses! Another bonus, samples are usually abundant.

In Orlando and also lots of other bigger (and some smaller) cities, food trucks are very popular. We typically have food truck gatherings or “pods” as many as 5 nights a week. These are great for kids. The types of trucks are very eclectic, and there’s always something for everyone. The trucks at this event are stationary, and since they are outside, there’s plenty of room for kids to roam.

Hotels/Water Parks

Look for deals at hotels or water parks. Many water parks in Florida offer a Florida resident discount. We also have several hotels where you can pay for a day pass to use just the pool. This can run you anywhere from $10 and up per person. Not free, but perhaps cheaper than a water park pass. If you are flexible on days you can go, always check for weekday deals that may be offered.
