Recently, I’ve talked about my new passion for running. One thing I didn’t talk about though was the music.

Music shapes our lives. It’s playing in the background of all our favorite TV shows and movies. We hum along to it as we drive. Some people play music when they clean their house and others have dance parties with their kids.

I listen to music when I run. The type of music you listen to is completely personal. It’s a preference. It can set the mood. It can bring you down or inspire you.

I don’t have a playlist. I prefer the variety of hearing something different each time I run. I load up my Pandora on the “Today’s Hit Radio” station and I’m continually surprised by what comes next. This doesn’t mean I don’t have favorites though.

There are certain songs that capture your every thought; as you sing along to them with your feet hitting the pavement, you erase your pain.

My top picks right now are:

We Are Young by Fun. Featuring Janelle Monae

Stronger by Kelly Clarkson

A Thousand Years by Christina Perri

And pretty much anything by Adele or Bruno Mars.

Then there are songs that just make you feel young. They give you energy. They allow you to be someone you’re not and escape into an alternate universe. Maybe we all want to be a 16-year-old girl again? (Nah!!!)

For me, those include songs by:

Justin Bieber

It’s amazing what the combination of the physical act of running and the mental inspiration of music can do for us.

So, readers, what are your top tunes?

Comment or email me at heatherc@mumblingmommy.com and we’ll publish the ultimate running mom’s playlist.
