Mumbling Mommy

Working from home is something that a lot of us have had to get used to in recent times. However, that is not to say that it is easy. There are a lot of different challenges that come with working from home.

Something that a lot of people struggle with is finding motivation. This can be challenging when you have your home distractions.

For professionals like medical malpractice attorneys or business consultants, setting up a home office can be important so that you have a professional and sophisticated space that your business deserves.

There are a number of other things that you can do as well, including the following:

It’s not just about what you do when you’re ‘at’ work

As much as we begrudge losing the time we could have spent in bed, commuting to and from the office help get us in the mindset for work.

Thanks to lockdown, that’s all but disappeared. But with restrictions now easing, it’s important to keep up a sense of routine in your working week. Whether that’s going for a run before you open your laptop, taking the dog for an early-morning walk or having a shower and doing your hair and makeup like you would pre-COVID. When you take that extra time before work begins, you help prepare yourself for the day ahead.

Don’t fall into the trap of rolling out of bed at 8:55 am and starting work at 9 am just because you’re working from home. It won’t serve you in the long run and you’ll end up spending the first half an hour of your working day trying to wake up.

Use the Pomodoro technique – and take regular breaks

Developed in the late 1980s, the Pomodoro technique is aptly named after the tomato-shaped timer Francesco Cirillo used to time 25-minute bursts of work during his university degree. Now, it’s become the go-to technique for remote workers trying to navigate the work-from-home environment.

It involves working in 25-minute bursts followed by a 5-minute break, or an extra juicy 20-minute break once you’ve completed four consecutive ‘pomodoros’.

Reviewed by The Muse before the word lockdown was in our vernacular, the process is said to boost motivation by creating a sense of urgency. When you regularly take breaks throughout the day, you force your brain to work hard during your allotted ‘working’ time. Plus, motivation comes easily when you know exactly when your next break will happen.
