As soon as you see one flea in your home it’s a safe assumption that there are more. Fleas generally arrive in your home on the back of your pets. Once they set up home on your pet they’ll lay eggs, these often drop to the floor, as does the odd flea, loosened by your dogs scratching.

Fleas will also happily find homes in soft furnishings, carpets, and rugs. They’ll lay eggs and then these will hatch in warm weather, becoming more fleas and increasing the issue for you.

You probably already know that fleas are amazing jumpers for their size, but you may not have realized that they are able to carry a variety of diseases, including bubonic plague, typhus, and tungiasis. None of which you want to contract.

They are more than just a nuisance (and that’s why you should click here and get professional help as soon as possible). Don’t forget that the average female flea only lives 30-90 days but during that time can lay as many as 5,000 eggs!

The question is how do you know when it’s time to call the exterminator?

Itchy Pets

The first and most obvious sign is that your pets are itching a lot. You can inspect their fur with a flea comb and potentially see the fleas. If the infection is really bad the fleas will be almost jumping off them.

You’ll also find small black dots across the skin of your pet.

Of course, getting flea treatment for your pets is essential at this stage but you need to consider how much they have spread.

Cleaning your house is effective but, miss just one female flea, and it all starts again. That’s why as soon as you see fleas on your pet you should hire a local professional to inspect your home for you ( click here for more details on how).

Bites

Another sign that you have an issue is when you start to get bitten yourself. Fleas will fall off your pets and the ones that hatch on your carpets will all be looking for a place to live and feed.

In the absence of a pet walking by the fleas will jump on you and bite. In general, this means the flea bites will be contained to the lower part of your legs. But, if they get on you and bite while you’re sitting or laying down then you could be bitten anywhere.

The good news is that although they’ll bite you, they won’t live on you, which means you don’t have to worry about them laying eggs on you.

Once you start feeling itchy and notice small red marks on your body you should suspect you have a serious issue with fleas.

In short, if your pets are itchy, you see a flea around your home, or you start to get bitten, it’s time to call the exterminator and get the problem resolved properly.
