Mumbling Mommy

Hearing and ear health are an important quality of life issue, for all ages. Understanding how to best care for your child’s hearing and ears will keep them happier, healthier and safe. Here are a few tips:

Participate in Hearing Tests

Hearing tests are something that adults tend to avoid, but are actually really important at all ages. Children thankfully typically undergo basic hearing tests at their physician checkups or even at school. A test will be able to determine any issues that your little one may be experiencing and can guide you on to the best path of treatment. If you need to take your baby into a high noise environment at any point, your audiologist may also be able to recommend the best hearing protection for your little one too!

Bathing Tips

Generally speaking, it’s best to bathe your little one carefully when it comes to their ears. Warm water and soapy products can irritate their ear canal, causing problems for them, from itching to infections. So, where possible, try to avoid getting shampoo or other products in the ear canal. You should also avoid pouring water or directing a shower directly into the ears. It is also recommended that you avoid using bath water to wash your child’s hair. Wherever possible, use fresh water that is free of products like bubble bath or body wash.

Avoid Cotton Buds or Q-Tips Inside the Ear Canal

Never use cotton buds or Q-tips inside your baby or infant’s ear canal. In fact, it’s recommended that nobody uses cotton buds inside their ear canal. This is not what cotton buds are designed for and can cause serious injury or damage to your little one’s ears. If you are concerned that your little one may have a build up of wax in their ears, consult your doctor who will be able to help safely.
