Mumbling Mommy

This post is brought to you by the Advanced Fertility Center

The National Center for Health Statistics in 2016 stated that there were over 17 million new mothers in the US in that year. While there is no proven one way to increase your fertility, there are some things to consider before embarking on that planning phase of pregnancy.

Consider fertile foods

Although there is no set of foods guaranteed to help you get pregnant, many experts believe that eating certain foods can boost your chances of conception. The vital nutrients in these foods like calcium, iron and protein prepare your body for pregnancy. You do not have to wait till you are pregnant to develop good eating habits. Start by taking in folic acid, which the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) recommends a 400mcg daily dosage for women looking to conceive within one month. Leafy green vegetables are also a good source of folic acid and must be diet staples. Experts also recommend oranges, milk, salmon, chickpeas, and fortified cereals as crucial for women if they are trying to conceive. Cut back on caffeine and sugar, eating more fruits and vegetables instead.

Seek professional help after a year

Most couples can expect to get pregnant within a year of trying, so if you are still young (below 35) and not pregnant, visit a doctor for a fertility evaluation. You will also need to see a doctor if you have a medical history of period issues, miscarriages, STIs and other chronic conditions. Although the process may seem overwhelming, several professionals like the Advanced Fertility Center exist to help you solve this problem and offer you the best treatment options possible. You should consider seeing a fertility expert for a diagnosis to understand your struggles and know the best way forward.

Make lifestyle modifications

Research has repeatedly linked certain habits to low chances of conception in women. Doctors recommend limiting or altogether eliminating your alcohol intake if you want to conceive. Studies suggest that consuming more than two alcoholic drinks per day may decrease fertility and extend the time it takes to become pregnant. Smoking is another habit that doctors advise to ditch altogether to boost your conception chances; it hastens the aging process of your ovarian follicles, which release the eggs responsible for the conception, resulting in quicker menopause.

The main takeaway when you are starting to plan your family is to take care of yourself — physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually.
