Mumbling Mommy

When you first bring a child into the world it can be a daunting task. Especially since the pandemic started last year, many new parents haven’t had the support from family and friends that they might need during these first few months.

Having a baby and looking after them is a task, but one that is incredibly rewarding. Today we want to focus on illness in babies and children — specifically, a fever.

A fever can be incredibly uncomfortable and dangerous for your child and it is important to treat them as soon as you can. Here are some of the signs that your child might have a fever.

Elevated Temperature

One of the first signs that your child has a fever is an elevated temperature. When your child or baby seems to be hot to the touch, this is a sign that they are fighting off a bug in their bodies. It is important to stock up on plenty of fever medicine for kids and ensure that you use methods to cool them down such as a cool bath or a cold pack and make them rest.

A Sore Throat

One of the earliest signs of illness in many kids is a sore throat. Often when bugs enter the body they will start to attack the cells of the throat first before reaching other parts of the body – hence why your child will notice a sore throat. One helpful remedy for this is to warm up some sweet blackcurrant cordial with honey and lemon and get your child to drink this. It will coat their throat and soothe the pain, and honey also has antibacterial properties so may help.

Dehydration

When your child or you notice that their mouth is dry – this is a sign that they are feeling dehydrated. When your child has a fever they will sweat much more, and as a result they will lose more water from their cells. It is so important for you to keep your child hydrated as not only will it help their cells fight back but it can help to regulate their temperature.

Loss of Appetite

One thing you will likely notice in your child if they have a fever is that they won’t have an appetite. This is likely because when the body enters fight mode against an illness, it shuts down other functions of the vodu such as digestion or the trigger of hunger. If you notice your child is struggling to eat their food make sure to check their temperature.

Muscle Pain

One big symptom of a fever is muscle aches and pains. If your baby is more fussy all of a sudden or your child is complaining of aching muscles – this is a sign of fever and your child needs to rest and relax. One helpful home remedy for soothing these pains would be a bath with Epsom salts to help soothe the muscles and keep your child relaxed.

Now that you know the signs to look out for, you’ll know when your child has a fever.
